France’s Burgundy region has been transformed in recent decades by rising temperatures and drier summers. During the current streak of hotter vintages from 2017 through 2020, the 2018 growing season proved to be the warmest year of the new century. Yet the year saw enough cool nights and rainfall to maintain freshness in the region’s reds, resulting in big, dense, fleshy and fruity Pinot Noirs that are still balanced. Senior editor Bruce Sanderson reviewed nearly 450 red Burgundies in blind tastings, most from the 2018 vintage, along with some late-release 2017s and 2016s. Get his full analysis, vintage rating and recommended top wines and top values.
