"A great wine that doesn't take itself so seriously—which I didn’t even know was possible for an inanimate object!" says actor Adam Scott. That's why the Critics' Choice Best Actor nominee from Parks and Recreation, now starring in Apple TV's Severance, recently joined E. & J. Gallo's Black Box Wines campaign as "The Savvy Man."

"We proposed the creation of a character who could embody the premium nature and brand equity of Black Box wine while also playing up humor," Black Box senior marketing director Adrienne Daniels told Wine Spectator. "No one fits that bill better than Adam Scott with his ability to showcase an elevated aesthetic balanced with a dry wit."

Founded in 2003, Black Box is now among the veterans of the evolving and improving category of boxed wines. It was acquired by Gallo in 2021 as part of an $810 million mega-deal with Constellation Brands. As the industry starts to rethink traditional glass bottles, Daniels thinks boxed wine makes sense and fits with current and future trends.

"We are bullish on the future of premium boxed wine," said Daniels. "It’s conveniently available whenever you want to have a glass of wine, as it stays fresh for six weeks after opening, and it has a lower carbon footprint than bottled wine."

Black Box is priced at $22 per 3-liter box (the equivalent of four standard bottles) and the lineup of nearly 20 wines includes California Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Mendoza Malbec, and a range of lower-calorie cuvées in the trending "Better for You" category. And for those still unsure about buying wine in a box, Scott's character has some advice: "If you're asking yourself, 'Can I be savvy, too?' Answer yourself 'Yes.'"
